What is an 'excess' on home insurance?

This is the amount you'll have to pay towards the cost of a claim. Some excesses are voluntary and others are compulsory and other Policy Excesses may allow a choice from a range of options. You may get a cheaper policy by agreeing to pay a higher voluntary excess.
