Frequently asked switching questions
You can use the service to switch your current account from and to any of the participating banks and building societies. Joint accounts can be switched, as long as both parties agree to the switch and you are switching to another joint account. It is not possible to use the service to switch a joint account to a sole account.
We cannot switch savings accounts. Any other products you have with your old bank will not be moved at the same time. If you have an ISA with another provider you can transfer it to Royal Bank using our transfer process here.
We will automatically redirect all incoming and outgoing payments to your new account. Each time a payment is redirected, an automatic message is sent back to the originator advising them of your new account details so they can update their records. Some organisations may contact you directly to confirm your details have changed. If you do not want your new details to be given to someone who sends a one-off payment, then please let us know.
Your old account will still be active and usable right up to and including Day 6. So, you can still pay with your card, and use online banking and mobile banking.
Just remember not to set up any new payments on your old account, as we can’t transfer new payments across.
You can cancel your switch up to seven working days before your switch date. If you do want to cancel, let us know and we will guide you through this process.
You will need to agree any overdraft facilities you require with us. We may be able to provide facilities to help you pay off any existing overdraft you may have, subject to our normal lending criteria. If you do not come to an agreement with us you must make separate arrangements to repay your existing overdraft.
If you complete a full switch with the Current Account Switch Service, your old bank will close your old account. This ensures that any payments made to your old account are automatically redirected to your new account with us.
If you would like to keep your old account open then you are free to do so, but you won’t be able to request a full switch through the Current Account Switch Service with us, and you will not be covered by the Guarantee. Speak to your existing bank and they can help explain your options.
No, you’ll need to cancel and re-authorise these with your new account details. You would need to contact the third party providers directly to discuss setting up payments with us. If your old account is still open, your bank will be able to tell you which third parties you’ve given permission to make payments on your behalf, and/or access your financial data.
Not all Third Party Providers services are supported by all banks and building societies, so there’s a chance that the Third Party Providers on your old account may not be able to access your new account. Please check our terms and conditions for more information about Third Party Providers.
You will need to make sure your details are up to date with your old bank, for example, if you have moved house and not informed your old bank of your new address.
You will also need to declare all existing parties on your account and have details of any active debit cards held with your bank.
Over 40 UK banks and building societies have signed-up to the Current Account Switch Service. You can check if your existing bank provider is a participant here.
If your old bank has not signed up to the service, you won't be able to switch your account to us in the usual way, you can however move your payments such as your Direct Debits and Standing Orders manually. Check out our ways to switch support page for more information on what you can do.
Just to let you know, you won't be eligible for our switch incentives if your old bank isn't part of the Current Account Switch Service.
