Help getting reunited with your money

Dormant Bank Accounts

Do you have money in a dormant account?

After 5 years, we'll drop you a note at the address we have for you, letting you know that if you don't use your account in the next 9 months, it'll go dormant. If your account's dormant, you might lose access to your funds. We're here to help you keep your money accessible.

If you think your account may have become dormant, please follow the steps below to help reclaim your funds.

Making a dormant request

1. Find your account details

  • Before you start reclaiming a dormant account, ensure you've got your account details. You'll need your account number, sort code and the account name to help us find your dormant account.
  • If you need to check your dormant account details, give us a call on 0345 366 6594 or chat to us now.
  • Without these details, we can't process your reclaim request, which may delay access to your funds.

2. Gather your ID documents

  • You'll need original documents like photo ID and proof of where you live. For more info please check what types of photo ID and proof of address we accept.
  • We'll need photo ID and proof of address from everyone listed on the dormant account.

3. Reclaim your dormant account

  • You can use our online form to send your request quickly and safely.
  • Follow the Dormant Reclaim link to open the form.
  • Tell us your details so we can help you reclaim your account.
  • Verify your identity with Mitek
  • Submit and take it easy.
  • Once we've verified you, we'll handle everything else for you.
  • Learn more about Mitek and how it protects your information by visiting our Mitek page.

Dormant Account FAQs

Other help available when we can't find your account?

Just to let you know, you can trace your lost accounts and savings with a free service called My Lost Account. This service helps you find accounts you may have forgotten about.

This free service brings together three tracing schemes, to help you trace your lost accounts and savings.

You can start tracing your lost accounts by visiting www.mylostaccount.org.uk.

Unclaimed Assets Scheme

We're part of the Unclaimed Assets Scheme set up by the Dormant Bank and Building Society Accounts Act 2008.

  • With this scheme, money from accounts that haven't been touched for 15 years or more can help the community, and you can still get your money back.
  • As part of the scheme, we can transfer balances of dormant accounts to Reclaim Fund Ltd (RFL). This is a not-for-profit reclaim fund, authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority.
  • If you've got a dormant account, your rights related to the account and entitlement to the balance aren't affected. RFL doesn't hold customer information or records in relation to transferred dormant account balances. You should continue to get in touch with us at your branch if you have any questions or complaints in relation to your account.
  • Both we and the RFL participate in the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). The transfer to RFL of dormant account balances won't affect any entitlement you have to compensation from the FSCS.
