Paying someone new

It’s easy to pay someone new using just their name, account number and sort code.

The quickest route

What you'll need

 

The latest version of the Royal Bank app already installed on your device.

The account type (Personal or Business), account number and sort code. 

The first and last name of the person you are looking to pay or the full company trading name of the business you are looking to pay.

Your step-by-step guide:

    Open your mobile app.

  2. 02

    Tap on the account you want to make a payment from.

  3. 03

    Tap on 'Payments'.

  4. 04

    Tap on 'Make a payment'.

  5. 05

    Tap ‘Select payee’ on Apple devices or ‘Choose payee’ on Android devices and then tap 'Pay someone new'.

    Enter the payee's first and last name or full company trading name, select the account type (Personal or Business), then the account number and sort code details of the person you want to pay.

    Choose the amount you wish to send, add a reference for the payment and then choose the date you want to send the money on, now or in the future.

    Where a Confirmation of Payee (CoP) check is performed you will receive a response to let you know if the name you have entered matches the details for the account. If the response from the payee's bank is ‘close match, no match or unable/unavailable’ we will give you advice on what to do next.

    If you have signed up for Biometric Approval you will be asked to authorise this payment with your selected biometric.

    If you have not signed up for Biometric Approval then, you may be asked to authorise this payment. If this happens you will see the ‘Authentication required’ screen. Just tap ‘Next’.

    Then re-enter your mobile app’s log in details, to re-confirm it’s you.

    Check and confirm the payment details are correct and tap 'Make payment'.

    That’s your payment complete! 

    If you need to print or download a record of this payment, simply tap 'View receipt' and follow the instructions on the screen.

What you'll need

 

To be registered for Digital Banking.

Your debit card and card reader or your mobile app if you have registered for biometric approval*.

The payee details - this includes the first and last name of the person you are looking to pay, as well as the account type, account number and sort code.

*When making the first payment in Digital Banking, a card reader or your mobile app if you have registered for biometric approval will be required.

Your step-by-step guide:

    Login to Digital Banking.

  2. 02

    Select 'Payments and transfers' from the left hand menu.

  3. 03

    Select which account you want to make the payment from.

  4. 04

    Click on ‘Pay someone new’.

  5. 05

    Type in the first and last name of the payee or the full company trading name (Up to 140 characters. Acceptable special characters are '/', '&' and '-'.).

    Type in the payee's sort code and bank account number.  

  6. 06

    Select the account type (Personal or Business).

  7. 07

    Click next, where a Confirmation of Payee (CoP) check is performed you will receive a response to let you know if the name you have entered matches the details for the account. If the response from the Payee's bank is ‘close match, no match or unable/unavailable’ we will give you advice on what to do next.

    Review and edit the payee name – the payee name will be prepopulated from the full name you provided but you have the option to edit it.
    The payee name will appear on your statement and the payee list (Up to 18 characters. Acceptable special characters are '/', '&' and '-'.).

    Type in a reference - this should be something to help identify you to the payee when using your mobile app or Digital Banking (Up to 18 characters. Acceptable special characters are '/', '&' and '-'.).

    Click next.

    Enter the amount you wish to pay, then select ‘Pay now’ or ‘Choose a date’ if you want to schedule this payment to leave on a future date.

    Click next.

    Before completing your payment you can review the details entered, if correct you will now need your debit card and card-reader - follow the on screen instructions.

    You can review the details entered, if correct you will now need your debit card and card-reader or your mobile app if you have registered for biometric approval - follow the on screen instructions.

    All done! You will see the payment confirmation and the option to print your transaction.

Paying a saved payee

If you have made a payment before via Digital Banking or the Mobile Banking app, the payee details are automatically saved. The best part is, if you're using the same payment details, you don’t need a card reader or biometric approval to complete the transaction.

    Tap on the account you wish to make a payment from.

    Tap on 'Payments'.

    Tap on 'Select payee' on Apple devices or 'Choose payee', on Android devices to choose who you want to pay.

    Enter the amount you want to pay and if you want to make to payment now or in the future .

    Tap  ‘Make payment’ on Apple devices or ‘Next’ on Android devices to continue.

    Check and confirm the payment details are correct and tap 'Make payment'.

    That’s your payment complete!

    If you need to print or download a record of this payment, simply tap 'View receipt' and follow the instructions on the screen.

  • Access to Digital Banking.

Your step-by-step guide:

    Log in to Digital Banking.

  2. 02

    Select 'Payments and transfers' from the left-hand menu.

  3. 03

    Under the 'Make a payment or transfer' heading select 'Make a payment or transfer'.

  4. 04

    Select the account you want to make the payment from, and from your list of saved payees select the person or company you want to pay.

  5. 05

    Enter the amount and the date you want the money to leave your account.

  6. 06

    Select 'Next' and carefully check your payment details before clicking 'Confirm'.

  7. 07

    Once you have clicked on 'Confirm' you will be shown a summary of your newly arranged payment. 

    You'll also have the option to print your payment confirmation.

Want to send money abroad?

You can make international payments quickly and safely using our Mobile Banking App or Digital Banking.

  • We don’t charge a fee to send standard international payments using digital banking or the mobile app.
  • Live rates, so that you know exactly how much you will pay when making a transaction.

Please be aware, the recipient bank may charge fees for international payments.
