SEPA Payments:

A SEPA payment is a Euro payment made between members of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).

Compared to a standard international payment, SEPA payments are a faster, simpler and cheaper way to make Euro payments between the countries within this agreement, as they're subject to a uniform set of rules. All SEPA payments require are an IBAN, a BIC and a reference, but do not require a specific purpose of payment (PoP) code.

Typically, the beneficiary should receive the funds on the same day that you make the payment, as long as the payment was made before 2:00pm. If not, the beneficiary should receive the funds next working day.

All charges under SEPA are shared (you only pay our fee if applicable, and the beneficiary pays their bank’s fee). It is not possible for you or beneficiary to pay both sets of fees.

Charges

Whenever you make an International Payment, there are two charges that must be paid - to Royal Bank of Scotland for making the payment, and to the Receiving Bank for processing the payment and crediting the account of the Payee. There are three ways in which the charges can be paid:

  • You and the payee share the charges (SHA/SHAR) - You'll pay our charge of £15 (or £0.50p for SEPA payments) and the payee will pay their bank's charges, so they may receive slightly less than you send
  • The payee pays both charges (BEN/CRED) - You pay no charge. Before sending the payment to the payee’s bank, we deduct our charge of £30, and the payee’s bank may apply a further charge before crediting the payee.

- So if you send £1,000, we'll deduct £30 from this, meaning the total sent is £970. The payee's bank will then likely apply a further charge for receiving the payment.

  • You pay our charges and the payee's bank charge (OUR/DEBT) - You'll pay our charge of £15 and the payee’s bank’s charge or agent fee which is £12.50 or £8.50, depending on the country to which it is sent*. The payee will receive the full amount of money you send.

- So if you send £1,000, you'll pay our £15 charge and the agent fee of £12.50 or £8.50; a total to £23.50 or £27.50 charged to you. The payee should receive the full £1,000**.

* This charge is currently £8.50 for payments to US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and European countries that are not in the SEPA zone, and £12.50 for the Rest of the World.

** Please note, in some cases for SWIFT international payments, intermediary banks may need to be involved, and they may deduct fees from the total sent amount, however your fees charged by us will be unaffected
