What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a UK government initiative which requires tax records and submissions to be managed online.

It’s designed to make it easier for people and businesses to get tax payments right.

With MTD for Income Tax, self-employed people and landlords will need to keep digital records and submit these to HMRC every quarter.

Who’s impacted and when

6 April 2026

Most self-employed people and landlords with an income over £50,000 must comply with MTD.

6 April 2027

Most self-employed people and landlords with an income over £30,000 must comply with MTD.

6 April 2028

Most self-employed people and landlords with an income over £20,000 must comply with MTD.

Preparing for Making Tax Digital in four steps

Step 1: open an RBS account

Our customers could get MTD-compatible software for free. Explore our bank accounts to find one that best suits your business needs.

Step 2: get software for free

To stay compliant with MTD, you need HMRC-recognised software. FreeAgent’s software is free for Royal Bank or Mettle customers.

Step 3: register with HMRC

Based on when MTD applies to you, you’ll need to register with HMRC. Once they confirm your registration, you can get started.

Step 4: submit digital records

You’ll need to keep digital records on FreeAgent or another MTD-compatible software. Then, provide quarterly updates and a final declaration to HMRC.
