Five things to know about the Royal Highland Show

  1. The first Royal Highland Show was held in 1822, on a site that is now home to the Scottish Parliament. The show has been held in Edinburgh’s Ingliston since 1960.
  2. 2023 was the largest show on record. Over the course of four days, 217,000 visitors came to the site and 140,000 people tuned in from 113 countries to watch RHS TV. 26,500 children visited for free.
  3. Among the visitors were HRH Anne, the Princess Royal; First Minister of Scotland Humza Yousaf; Minister of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affair, Mark Spencer; Secretary of State for Scotland Alister Jack; and Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Land Reform and Islands, Mairi Gougeon.
  4. This year, champion sheep shearers flocked from around the world to compete. Individual winners were: Gwion Lloyd Evans from Wales for Machine; Bonile Rabela from South Africa for Blade; and, Rosie Keenan from Scotland for Wool Handling.
  5. But RHS is more than agriculture. Each year, typically some 50 bands put on a show of music ranging from folk to rock. This year, a new event - the Hoolie - included country music legends Skipinnish, Skerryvore and Derek Ryan, who performed to 4,500-strong crowds.
