Carbon Footprint Tracker

Calculate your carbon footprint in our app

Introducing our Carbon Footprint Tracker

Do you want to see the impact your spending has on the environment? We've teamed up with carbon footprint experts, CoGo, to let you calculate your carbon footprint in the Royal Bank app. You'll see your estimated footprint and we'll give you tips that could help reduce it.

Our goal is to be a leading bank in addressing the climate challenge. This means reducing our own carbon footprint but with our Carbon Footprint Tracker we want to help you reduce yours too.

Carbon Footprint Tracker is available once you've opted to use the Spending feature in our app. The tracker feature is provided in conjunction with CoGo. Spending is available to customers aged 16+ who have a Personal or Premier account with us.

How does your carbon footprint compare?

How we calculate your carbon footprint

We do this by analysing your monthly transactions and matching them to their industry category (e.g. grocery, energy, transport).

From £s to kg CO2

Each transaction amount is multiplied by an emissions factor per industry category to calculate the carbon footprint of that purchase.

For example, if you spend £15 on a dress at an average high-street retailer, that could equate to a footprint of 16kg CO2. The same £15 spent on a dress from a charity shop could have a lower footprint of around 4kg CO2.

About the calculation

The footprint calculated is a best estimate as we can only see your whole transaction amount, and not your basket level data.

For example, if you spend £50 on grocery shopping, we will not know the individual items you have purchased.

What you'll see

The number you see when you land on your carbon tracking homepage is the best estimate total carbon footprint for all your transactions for your previous month.

Carbon footprint facts

According to footprint experts, CoGo (accurate as of 2021):

  • The average monthly carbon footprint of a UK citizen is approximately 1,000kgs.

  • Cutting red meat out of your diet could reduce the footprint of your grocery spend by approximately 10% per pound spent

  • Scientists around the world recommend we each reduce our carbon footprint to around 180kgs a month by 2030 to limit some of the serious impacts of the climate crisis.
