Get a grip on your budget


Lifes always better with a little spare cash for the fun things. Try our 13 simple ideas and watch your money go further.

  1. No new books- buy second hand ones from your union or other students
  2. Pick own-label brands- slash the cost of your supermarket shop
  3. Go large- club together with your friends, buying value packs and 'two for one' deals
  4. Deal with your bills- leave something aside, and set up Direct Debits if you're the forgetful sort
  5. Pin down your mobile- keep an eye on long-distance call charges, or roaming charges when you use your phone overseas
  6. Get free financial tips- talk to your Student Manager in your local RBS branch
  7. Think campus- for the first year at least, it can help you save money and meet friends if you stay in university halls of
  8. Control your overdraft- know your limit, and speak to your Student Manager if you think you might go over it. This could stop fees and charges
  9. Pay less tax- if you've got a job, find out if you need to fill in a P38(S) (PDF, 61KB). This bit of paper could stop you getting taxed on your earnings. And don't forget about the R85 form. This makes sure you get interest paid gross on your savings if you are a 0% taxpayer. It saves tax being deducted at source
  10. Get a part-time job- but make a point of limiting your work so that your studies don't suffer. The minimum wage for 18 to 21 year-olds is £4.60 an hour. If you're over 22, it's £5.52.
  11. Do your sums- the Student Money website is a good place to search for funding or plan your budget. You can also see how much you could earn when you graduate.
