Mobile Security Hints and Tips

The information you need to stay secure

Passwords: Remember, do not give your mobile banking security details, including your passcode, to anyone else and don’t store these on your device

Get in touch with us as soon as possible if you feel someone may know your log in details for your mobile banking application or if you lose your mobile phone or tablet. We can then stop the service to your device

For added security you should set up a password or PIN to access your mobile phone or tablet device

App stores: Only download mobile apps from official app stores, such as Apple iTunes, Android Marketplace and Blackberry App World. Our apps are only available on official app stores.

Using in public: Don’t leave your device unattended when logged on, watch out for people looking over your shoulder, and consider using privacy screens with any tablet device

Your handset: Think carefully before removing any security controls from your handset, this is known as jail-breaking or rooting your device. We advise against doing this as it may weaken the security of your device and expose you to additional risks

If possible, keep your mobile devices operating system updated with the latest security patches and upgrades. Older software may have security vulnerabilities that could expose you to additional risks

You may also want to consider using a reputable brand of anti-virus software on your mobile banking device.

SMS’s and e-mails: Be cautious about opening links contained in SMS messages or emails. Don't respond to unsolicited messages or phone calls, and remember that we will never contact you to ask you to disclose your security credentials

Websites and apps: Only use official RBS app and sites to do your banking. While other sites exist that also provide this service to use these will compromise your security and may breach T&C’s

Don’t download content from or visit sites unless you are sure that the site is reputable. This is to safeguard against installing malicious software. Also be wary of using insecure and untrusted Wireless networks
